In Switzerland, there are more than 230 approved apprenticeship occupations, and 40% of all companies participate in the system. In that environment, 70% of Swiss students choose apprenticeships and 30% of them stay with their training company or return after college. In fact, many of the world’s largest companies are run by CEOs that started out as an apprentice. It’s that kind of endless possibility that HERE to HERE and its partners have worked to build through CareerWise New York—which offers apprenticeships that begin in high school and move young people toward career success. HERE to HERE’s CareerWise New York looks to the Swiss apprenticeship system for inspiration and has adapted many of its elements to the New York model.
In summer 2020, CareerWise New York launched as an independent organization aligned with a new scaled employer coalition committed to enhancing opportunities for young people, the New York Jobs CEO Council. These changes are the result of an enormous amount of work by HERE to HERE and our partners to establish and incubate the Business Council as well as CareerWise New York. Launching far-reaching initiatives that are scalable and have the power to deliver high-quality work-based learning to all NYC youth is one of the reasons why HERE to HERE exists.
